On This Day in Sport (22 May 2011):

1990: Wembley staged its first game since being converted to an all-seater stadium as Uruguay beat England in a friendly. It was England's first home defeat for six years and was watched by a crowd of just 38,751.
1996: Juventus beat Ajax on penalties to win the Champions League final in Rome.
1999: Newly-crowned Premiership champions Manchester United beat Newcastle 2-0 in the FA Cup final at Wembley. They went on to win the Champions League final against Bayern Munich to complete an unprecedented treble four days later.
2005: Rangers claimed the Bank of Scotland Premier League title in the most sensational fashion. The Gers defeated Hibernian at Easter Road but the Ibrox club were helped to the title as Motherwell stunned Celtic with a 2-1 triumph at Fir Park, with Scott McDonald scoring twice in the last two minutes.

BASKETBALL
Great Britain women edged out Latvia 67-64 in Guildford to finish third at the British Basketball Invitational Tournament as part of their ongoing preparations for the European Championship. Natalie Stafford scored 18 points while Azania Stewart and Julie Page had 10 each, with Stewart adding eight rebounds.
CYCLING
Spain's Igor Anton conquered the punishing climb up Monte Zoncolan to win a shortened stage 14 of the Giro d'Italia as compatriot Alberto Contador strengthened his hold on the leader's pink jersey. Anton, riding for Euskaltel-Euskadi, broke clear with five kilometres remaining of the final 10km ascent to claim victory ahead of Contador with home favourite Vincenzo Nibali third.
CANOEING
Rachel Cawthorn produced an outstanding individual performance to claim bronze in the women's K1 500m at the World Cup in Racice, Czech Republic. Cawthorn endured a miserable winter as she was laid low by a virus that saw her miss months of training, but this result comes as a major confidence boost.
