1935: Jesse Owens set six athletics world records in 45 minutes at Ann Arbor, Michigan. His long jump record stood for 25 years.
1965: Muhammad Ali made light work of his first defence of the world heavyweight boxing crown, knocking out Sonny Liston in the first round.
1967: Celtic became the first British club to win the European Cup, beating Inter Milan 2-1 in Lisbon.
1977: Liverpool won their first European Cup, beating Borussia Monchengladbach 3-1 in Rome.
2003: Rangers won Bank of Scotland Premier League title on goal difference from Celtic after a 6-1 win over Dunfermline.
2004: Fabrice Santoro defeated Arnaud Clement 6-4 6-3 6-7 (5/7) 3-6 16-14 in the French Open. The clash lasted more than six and a half hours, the longest match in tennis history.
2005: Liverpool won the Champions League final, beating AC Milan 3-2 on penalties in Istanbul after recovering from 3-0 down at half time.

CYCLING
Alberto Contador burned off his nearest rivals in a gruelling mountain time-trial to win his second stage of this year's Giro d'Italia and strengthen his grip on first place. The Saxo Bank-Sungard rider completed the 16th stage from Beluno to Nevegal in 28 minutes and 55 seconds. Vincenzo Nibali of Liquigas was 34 seconds adrift, while Lampre's Michele Scarponi finished four seconds further adrift.
