1907: The first TT race on the Isle of Man took place. One race was held over 10 laps of the St John's Circuit. The single cylinder was won by Charlie Collier on a Matchless travelling at an average speed of 38.2mph.
1980: Nottingham Forest won their second consecutive European Cup, beating Hamburg 1-0 in the final staged in Madrid.
1982: Diego Maradona moved from Boca Juniors to Barcelona in soccer's first £5million transfer.
1990: Maiden, skippered by Tracy Edwards with the first all-female crew, finished second in the Whitbread Round the World Race.
2001: Bolton beat Preston 3-0 in the First Division play-off to win promotion to the Barclays Premiership.
2002: First Division Wimbledon were given the green light to relocate to Milton Keynes despite vehement opposition from many of their supporters and the Football Association.
2003: AC Milan won the Champions League, beating Juventus 3-2 on penalties in the final after a goalless draw at Old Trafford.
2004: Valencia announced they would open contract talks with manager Rafael Benitez after he was linked with Liverpool. The Spaniard shortly afterwards left to take up the Anfield post.

EQUESTRIAN
Great Britain's showjumpers claimed a second successive fourth place finish as the FEI Nations Cup series continued in Rome. The British quartet of Nick Skelton, Ben Maher, Peter Charles and Robert Smith ended level with Nations Cup holders France and Germany, each collecting four points. Holland took top spot after clear rounds by Eric van der Vleuten and Harrie Smolders, plus one time fault from Gerco Schroder, meant they triumphed without their final rider needing to jump.
ROWING
Great Britain had a successful start to the World Rowing Cup in Munich on Friday as 12 of their 14 Olympic-class boats won their respective opening time trials.
ATHLETICS
Usain Bolt marked his return to major competition after a 10-month absence by sweeping to victory in the men's 100 metres at the Diamond League meeting in Rome on Thursday night. The world record holder shrugged off a poor start to overhaul his Jamaican compatriot Asafa Powell and win in 9.91 seconds. Powell was second in 9.93 with Frenchman Christophe Lemaitre in third.
