1902: Edgbaston became the fifth English Test cricket ground - and England celebrated by bowling out Australia for just 36 runs.
1968: Two goals from Bobby Charlton helped Manchester United beat Benfica 4-1 after extra time to become the first English winners of the European Cup.
1985: A riot at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels resulted in the death of 39 people at the European Cup final between Juventus and Liverpool.
2006: It was announced that Wayne Rooney's second scan on his broken foot would be brought forward to June 7 in a desperate bid to get the striker fit for the World Cup in Germany.

CYCLING
Bradley Wiggins won the individual time trial on the fourth stage of Bayern-Rundfahrt in devastating fashion on Saturday, finishing more than 30 seconds clear of Fabian Cancellara (Leopard Trek) in second. And on a perfect day for Team Sky Geraint Thomas came home in fifth position to take the overall lead in the race heading into Sunday's final stage, while Edvald Boasson Hagen finished in third.
MODERN PENTATHLON
Olympic silver-medallist Heather Fell won her first Modern Pentathlon World Cup medal of the year by taking silver in Chengdu, China on Saturday. Fell, 28 from Plymouth, went into the the final discipline, the run/shoot, in third place, but surged into the first place only to lose ground on Russia's Ekaterina Khuraskina in the closing stages.
