ATHLETICS
Jessica Ennis has insisted that she can only get
better after her commanding victory in the Hypo Meeting in Gotzis.
Despite missing seven weeks of full training and the European Indoor
Championships with an ankle tendon injury, proved she was back to her
best with the win. In fact the 25-year-old's total score of 6,790
points was just 33 below her personal best and 59 more than when she
won the world title in Berlin two years ago.

Englishman Dan Wheldon
benefited from a last-corner accident to win the 2011 Indy 500, his

destined to finish as the runner-up for the third successive year
until leader JR Hildebrand crashed into the wall on the very last

more than six minutes as the 21-stage event concluded in Milan. The
28-year-old Saxo Bank-Sungard rider, who also won the Giro in 2008,
had the victory all but sealed before Sunday and carefully negotiated
the streets of Milan to ensure there were no late surprises on the
final time trial of the three-week race. Britain's sprint specialist
David Millar of Garmin Cervelo won the final 26-kilometres individual
time trial in 30 minutes 13 seconds to clinch his first stage in this
year's competition.

Great Britain's rowers were celebrating a successful

led home Andrea Dennis and Kathryn Twyman for a fantastic one-two in
the lightweight women's double scull. The duo of Katherine
Grainger and Mel Wilson also took gold in the women's
double with the latter filling in capably for the injured Anna
Watkins Helen Glover and Heather Stanning also
added gold medals to the silvers they secured at the world
championships last year. For the men it was a successful afternoon in
the pairs for Andrew Triggs Hodge and Pete Reed,
who won a gold in a world cup event for the first time in over two
years with another gold coming in the men's four. |
