1911: Ray Harroun won the inaugural Indianapolis 500 in a Marmon Wasp.
1971: Essex's Keith Boyce set a John Player Sunday League record when he took eight Lancashire wickets for 26 runs.
1996: England's footballers returned from a tour of Hong Kong amid tales of a drunken binge which started in a club and continued on the flight home. The airline, Cathay Pacific, reported £5,000 of damage to their plane.
1999: Manchester City scored twice in the dying seconds to force extra time in their play-off final against Gillingham at Wembley and went on to win a penalty shoot-out which secured their promotion to Division One.
2002: Former Great Britain international Karl Harrison took over as coach at Super League Salford on the same day the City Reds suspended Bobbie Goulding over an alleged training ground bust-up. Harrison was sacked last week.
2005: West Ham were promoted to Premiership after a 1-0 win over Preston in the Championship play-off final at the Millennium Stadium.
2006: Theo Walcott became England's youngest international at 17 years and 75 days in a 3-1 friendly victory over Hungary at Old Trafford.

ATHLETICS
Jessica Ennis has insisted that she can only get better after her commanding victory in the Hypo Meeting in Gotzis. Despite missing seven weeks of full training and the European Indoor Championships with an ankle tendon injury, proved she was back to her best with the win. In fact the 25-year-old's total score of 6,790 points was just 33 below her personal best and 59 more than when she won the world title in Berlin two years ago.
MOTOR RACING
Englishman Dan Wheldon benefited from a last-corner accident to win the 2011 Indy 500, his second victory in one of motorsport's major events. Wheldon looked destined to finish as the runner-up for the third successive year until leader JR Hildebrand crashed into the wall on the very last turn of the race.
RALLYING
Sebastien Loeb produced a faultless final-day drive to come from third and win the Rally Argentina, increasing his lead at the top of the driver's championship in the process.
CYCLING
Spain's Alberto Contador claimed his second Giro d'Italia crown on Sunday afternoon, holding off his closest rival by more than six minutes as the 21-stage event concluded in Milan. The 28-year-old Saxo Bank-Sungard rider, who also won the Giro in 2008, had the victory all but sealed before Sunday and carefully negotiated the streets of Milan to ensure there were no late surprises on the final time trial of the three-week race. Britain's sprint specialist David Millar of Garmin Cervelo won the final 26-kilometres individual time trial in 30 minutes 13 seconds to clinch his first stage in this year's competition.
ROWING
Great Britain's rowers were celebrating a successful final day at the World Cup in Munich after securing 11 medals, including five golds. Hester Goodsell and Sophie Hosking led home Andrea Dennis and Kathryn Twyman for a fantastic one-two in the lightweight women's double scull. The duo of Katherine Grainger and Mel Wilson also took gold in the women's double with the latter filling in capably for the injured Anna Watkins Helen Glover and Heather Stanning also added gold medals to the silvers they secured at the world championships last year. For the men it was a successful afternoon in the pairs for Andrew Triggs Hodge and Pete Reed, who won a gold in a world cup event for the first time in over two years with another gold coming in the men's four.
