ATHLETICS
Asafa Powell laid down a challenge to his 100metre
rivals by clocking a wind-aided 9.75seconds as the IAAF Diamond
League got under way in Doha. The Jamaican former world record
holder, running his first 100m of the season, recorded the time in
his heat before winning the final in a windy 9.81sec at the inaugural
meeting in the series at the Qatar Sports Club.
CYCLING
Australia's Matthew Lloyd won stage six of the Giro
d'Italia after a day-long break as Vincenzo Nibali held on to the
race leader's pink jersey for a third successive day. Lloyd (Omega
Pharma-Lotto) went clear along with Switzerland's Rubens Bertogliati
(Androni Giocattoli), but attacked on the final climb of the
172-kilometres stage from Fidenza to Marina di Carrara to claim his
first Grand Tour victory. |
