CYCLING
Mark Cavendish let his cycling do
the talking as he won the first stage of the Tour of California on
Sunday. The 24-year-old Manxman was withdrawn from the Tour de
Romandie by his HTC-Columbia team at the end of April following a
two-fingered salute which accompanied just his second win of the season.
ATHLETICS
Jessica Ennis was delighted with
her early season form after claiming victory on the streets of
Manchester on Sunday. The world heptathlon champion won over
150metres in 16.99 seconds ahead of Commonwealth Youth 100m and 200m
gold medallist Shaunna Thompson and Olympic 400m champion Christine
Ohuruogu at the Powerade City Games.
TAEKWONDO
Britain's Sarah
Stevenson and Aaron Cook each picked up a
gold medal at the European Taekwondo Championships. Doncaster's
Stevenson, the Olympic bronze medallist at Beijing, overcame a slow
start to beat Turkey's Nur Tatar in the under 67kg category at the St
Petersburg venue. Dorchester's Cook beat Nikolaos Tzellos of Greece
in the under 80kg category.
CYCLING
Ben Swift has given Team Sky their
first overall victory by winning the Tour de Picardie in northern
France. The 22-year-old from Rotherham was the dominant rider in the
three-day race, finishing a close-up second on stage one, landing the
spoils on stage two and then safely finishing in the front group on
the final day to wrap up the general classification.
JUDO
Great Britain added two more
bronze medals to their tally on day two of the British Open
Championships at the Crawley Leisure Centre. Having picked up seven
medals on day one of the competition, the hosts saw their total swell
when Chris Sherrington finished third in the +100kg category and
Siobhan O'Neill took to the podium in the -52kg weight category.
MOTORCYCLING
Series leader Leon Haslam and
Michel Fabrizio shared the wins at the sixth round of the Superbike
World Championship season at Kyalami in South Africa. Italian
Fabrizio has suffered a miserable campaign to date for Xerox Ducati
but breathed fresh life into his bid with a dominant win in race one,
while British rider Haslam claimed the laurels in a thrilling second race. |
