1865: Legendary England bowler George Lohmann was
born. The medium-pacer took 112 wickets in just 18 Test matches and
still boasts one of the lowest bowling averages (8.87) in Test
history. He died aged just 36 in 1901.
1904: Swimmer Johnny Weissmuller was born. He became
the first man to swim 100 metres in less than one minute and won five
gold medals at the 1924 and 1928 Olympics. He later moved into acting
and played Tarzan in the eponymous film.
1954: Lester Piggott won his first Epsom Derby at the
age of 18 on Never Say Die, a 33-1 shot.
1970: Former Formula One world champion Bruce McLaren
died after a testing accident.
1985: UEFA ruled English clubs would be banned
indefinitely from European competition following the riot at the
Heysel Stadium, in which Liverpool fans were involved.
2000: Dutch striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink signed for
Chelsea from Atletico Madrid for £15million.
2003: Former Tottenham player Ossie Ardiles took over
as coach at Tokyo Verdy.
2004: Jose Mourinho was unveiled as new manager of
Chelsea on a three-year contract.
2005: Wicketkeeper Keith Piper was sacked by
Warwickshire after testing positive for cannabis.
2006: Chelsea agreed a combined fee of £16million
to complete the controversial signing of Mikel John Obi,
£12million going to Manchester United and £4million to Lynn Oslo.
2010 England depart for South Africa today with a
World Cup good luck message delivered through tears of pain from axed
