1938: Two players, Leonidas for Brazil and Ernst Wilimowski for Poland, scored four goals each in the World Cup match at Stade de la Meinau in Strasbourg. The final score was 6-5 to the South Americans.
1968: Alan Mullery became the first man to be sent off in a full international for England in a European Championship match in Florence, which Yugoslavia won 1-0.
1998: Aston Villa completed the signing of Bolton midfielder Alan Thompson.
1999: Britain's Joe Calzaghe retained his WBO super-middleweight title with a unanimous points verdict over Australia's Rick Thornberry in Cardiff.
2000: England drew the second Test with Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge and won the two-Test series 1-0 - their first home series triumph in two years.
2003: Steve Coppell agreed a one-year deal with Brighton.
2005: Ricky Hatton won the IBF light-welterweight title after Kostya Tszyu failed to come out for the 12th round of their fight in Manchester.
2006: England lost the third Test against Sri Lanka by 134 runs at Trent Bridge to see the series end as 1-1 draw.

ATHLETICS
Justin Gatlin finished sixth in a blistering 100 metres at the Diamond League meeting in Eugene on Saturday night. Gatlin, who is returning from a drugs ban, broke the 10 second barrier with a time of 9.97, but finished well adrift of Jamaica's Steve Mullings who won in a time of 9.80. Six of the eight runners finished in under 10 seconds as the wind helped in Oregon.

The American cruised home in 9.79 seconds, with the next best in 2011 achieved hours later by unheralded Jamaican Steve Mullings, who ran 9.80secs in the Diamond League event in Oregon.
TRIATHLON
Brothers Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee completed a Great Britain one-two in the ITU World Championship race in Madrid. Elder brother Alistair completed his third successive win in the Spanish event and Jonathan took silver after the pair held off home favourite Javier Gomez in a strong running section. The pair even had time for a showpiece finish as Alistair, who had broken clear in the last kilometre, waited to link arms with his brother before crossing the line first.
MOTOR CYCLING
Isle of Man TT great John McGuinness claimed his 16th title at the festival with victory in the Dainese Superbike event on Saturday afternoon. The English veteran, riding a Honda, saw off an early challenge from rival Bruce Anstey and eventually won by 56.9 seconds from Cameron Donald after six laps of the 37.7-mile course.
ATHLETICS
Mo Farah smashed the European 10,000 metres record in winning the Prefontaine Classic at the Eugene Diamond League meeting in Oregon. The Londoner's time of 26 minutes 46.57 seconds broke Belgian Mohammed Mourhit's European benchmark of 26:52.30 set in 1999, while also eclipsing Jon Brown's 13-year-old British record of 27:18.14.
