ATHLETICS
Justin Gatlin finished sixth in a blistering 100
metres at the Diamond League meeting in Eugene on Saturday night.
Gatlin, who is returning from a drugs ban, broke the 10 second
barrier with a time of 9.97, but finished well adrift of Jamaica's
Steve Mullings who won in a time of 9.80. Six of the eight runners
finished in under 10 seconds as the wind helped in Oregon.
Tyson Gay ran the quickest 100 metres of the year at
the Star Athletics Last Chance meeting in Clermont, Florida on
Saturday. The American cruised home in 9.79 seconds, with the next
best in 2011 achieved hours later by unheralded Jamaican Steve
Mullings, who ran 9.80secs in the Diamond League event in Oregon.
TRIATHLON
Brothers Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee completed a
Great Britain one-two in the ITU World Championship race in Madrid.
Elder brother Alistair completed his third successive win in the
Spanish event and Jonathan took silver after the pair held off home
favourite Javier Gomez in a strong running section. The pair even had
time for a showpiece finish as Alistair, who had broken clear in the
last kilometre, waited to link arms with his brother before crossing
the line first.
MOTOR CYCLING
Isle of Man TT great John McGuinness claimed his 16th
title at the festival with victory in the Dainese Superbike event on
Saturday afternoon. The English veteran, riding a Honda, saw off an
early challenge from rival Bruce Anstey and eventually won by 56.9
seconds from Cameron Donald after six laps of the 37.7-mile course.
ATHLETICS
Mo Farah smashed the European 10,000 metres record in
winning the Prefontaine Classic at the Eugene Diamond League meeting
in Oregon. The Londoner's time of 26 minutes 46.57 seconds broke
Belgian Mohammed Mourhit's European benchmark of 26:52.30 set in
1999, while also eclipsing Jon Brown's 13-year-old British record of 27:18.14. |
