1908: The first international football match between a British team and foreign opposition took place in Vienna, England beating Austria 6-1.
2000: Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips was voted the Carling Player of the Year after netting 30 Premiership goals.
2002: Former Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz was appointed assistant manager at Manchester United.
2003: Casual Look, ridden by Martin Dwyer and trained by Andrew Balding, won the Vodafone Oaks at Epsom.
2004: Argentina's Gaston Gaudio won the men's singles title at the French Open, beating compatriot Guillermo Coria 0-6 3-6 6-4 6-1 8-6.
2007: West Ham completed the £7million signing of midfielder Scott Parker from Newcastle.

MOTOR CYCLING
Casey Stoner closed the gap on Jorge Lorenzo at the top of the MotoGP standings after easing to a convincing victory in tricky conditions at Sunday's Catalunya Grand Prix. The Repsol Honda rider mastered both his rivals and a damp track to register his third victory in five races this season and move to within seven points of Spaniard Lorenzo, who had to settle for second place in front of his home fans. Third place went to Ben Spies, the American claiming his first podium finish of the year for the factory Yamaha squad.
TRIATHLON
Great Britain's Helen Jenkins was edged out for gold but clinched an impressive second-place finish in Sunday's ITU World Championship race in Madrid. The 27-year-old was outsprinted by Canadian Paula Findlay in the race for the line, and her time of two hours, three minutes and 49 seconds put her three seconds down on the winner.
EQUESTRIAN
British showjumper Nick Skelton continued his blistering form by winning the Longines Grand Prix of Switzerland in St Gallen on Sunday. The Warwickshire-based Olympian topped a 10 horse jump-off with Carlo to land a £54,600 top prize. It ended an impressive St Gallen show for British riders after Skelton, Robert Smith, Scott Brash and Tim Stockdale secured second place in Friday's FEI Nations Cup round.
