1904: Delegates from seven countries formed FIFA at a meeting in Paris. The founder members of what would become football's world governing body were Belgium, Denmark, France, Holland, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
1966: Henry Cooper's dream of taking the world heavyweight crown was dashed when a cut eye put paid to his challenge to champion Muhammad Ali at Highbury football stadium.
2003: Celtic lost the UEFA Cup final in Seville. The Glasgow side were beaten 3-2 by Porto.
2006: Watford were promoted to Premiership after beating Leeds 3-0 in the Championship play-off final at the Millennium Stadium.

Team Katusha's Filippo Pozzato recorded the first Italian stage win in this year's Giro D'Italia after a tight sprint finish to stage 12. The 206-kilometre haul from Citta Sant'Angelo to Porto Recanati did not witness a repeat of stage 11's sensational events, which saw an entirely new top 10 after a mass early breakaway.
