1985: Barry McGuigan ended the Panamanian Eusebio Pedroza's seven-year reign as WBA featherweight champion to become the first UK holder of the title since Howard Winstone in 1968.
1990: The opening game of the soccer World Cup in Italy produced a shock for defending champions Argentina, who were beaten 1-0 by Cameroon in front of 73,780 fans in Milan.
2005: Newcastle midfielder Lee Bowyer was summoned to appear in court over a public order offence relating to an on-pitch incident involving team-mate Kieron Dyer.
2006: Andrew Strauss was named as England captain for the one-day series against Sri Lanka after Andrew Flintoff was rested on medical advice. Strauss held the job for the rest of the summer as Flintoff underwent ankle surgery.

SAILING
Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark led a British surge on the second day of the Skandia Sail For Gold Regatta in Weymouth Bay as they claimed the overall lead in the 470 class. A seventh place and a race win was enough for Mills and Clark to leapfrog their rivals while Laser Radial sailor Alison Young also impressed with two race wins and a second.
CYCLING
John Degenkolb produced a power-packed display to win stage two of the Critérium du Dauphiné in Lyon. The young HTC-Highroad rider surged to the head of affairs on the final short but sharp climb, a 1.8km rise at 4.8%, to the top of the Côte de la Croix-Rousse.
