1899: Bob Fitzsimmons, the first British heavyweight champion of the world, was defeated in 11 rounds by James J Jeffries at Coney Island, New York. Fitzsimmons had held the title for two years. He failed to regain it when he fought Jeffries again in 1902.
1975: Geoff Boycott scored 246 not out in just under 10 hours for England against India at Headingley. His innings took so long he was dropped for the next Test.
1990: Monica Seles, at 16 years and six months, became the youngest winner of a Grand Slam tournament since Lottie Dod in 1887 when she beat Steffi Graf 7-6 6-4 in the French Open final at Roland Garros.
1997: England were crowned winners of Le Tournoi de France after 3-3 draw between Italy and Brazil.
2003: Fulham defender Steve Finnan completed a £3.5million move to Liverpool.
2005: Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho's appeal against a £5,000 fine for improper conduct after comments he made following his side's Carling Cup semi-final first leg against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge were dismissed by the Football Association. Mourinho said after the game: "In the second half it was whistle and whistle, fault and fault, cheat and cheat."

SAILING
Triple Olympic champion Ben Ainslie extended his lead at the top of the Finn fleet while Great Britain leads in four more classes at the halfway stage of the Skandia Sail For Gold regatta. Ainslie mastered the conditions in Weymouth Bay on Wednesday to claim two race wins, giving him a nine-point advantage over fellow Briton Giles Scott, who jumped from fourth to second.
CYCLING
Team Sky's Bradley Wiggins is the new leader of the Critérium du Dauphiné after an outstanding display in the stage three time trial. The British time trial champion was second on the stage, 11 seconds behind winner Tony Martin (HTC-Highroad), but he finished well ahead of his rivals on the general classification.
