On This Day in Sport (24 May 2010):

1899: French tennis star Suzanne Lenglen, the first non-English speaking winner of the Wimbledon women's singles title, was born. She won the first of her six Wimbledon singles titles in 1919. The loose, short-length dress she wore revolutionised fashion in the women's game. Five of her titles were won in consecutive years, 1919-23. She died in 1938.
1984: Alan Pettigrew set a world record by throwing a haggis 180ft 10in (55.1 metres) at Inchmurrin, Strathclyde.
2000: England midfielder Steve McManaman scored a second-half volley to help Real Madrid beat Valencia 3-0 in the Champions League final.
2001: Former England boss Kevin Keegan took charge at Manchester City.
2003: James Anderson claimed a debut five-wicket haul as Zimbabwe lost 19 wickets in a day to lose the first Test against England at Lord's by an innings and 92 runs.
2005: Former England, Chelsea and Blackburn full-back Graeme Le Saux announced his retirement from professional football.

CYCLING
Michael Rogers (HTC-Columbia) won the Tour of California on Sunday after holding off his rivals in the final miles of the concluding circuit race which was won by Ryder Hesjedal. The Australian entered the eighth and last stage with a nine-second lead and he repelled sustained challenges during the 83.5-mile stage on a hilly circuit in Ventura County.
MOTORCYCLING
Jorge Lorenzo beat Fiat Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi to victory at the Monster Energy Grand Prix de France to extend his MotoGP Championship lead. Lorenzo claimed his second win of the season in the third round at Le Mans and now lies nine points clear of Rossi atop the leaderboard.
ATHLETICS
Phillips Idowu leapt to a world-leading 17.48 metres to win the triple jump at the Grande Premio Brasil Caixa de Atletismo meeting in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday. The world champion's mark was one centimetre further than the distance Cuba's Alexis Copello posted at the first IAAF Diamond League meeting in Doha earlier this month. Copello was second with 17.31m.
CYCLING
Emma Pooley completed victory in the 10-day Tour de l'Aude in France on Sunday, becoming the first Briton to win the prestigious race. Pooley won Friday's seventh stage to extend her lead in the overall ranking and was untroubled in Sunday's ninth stage as she completed victory.
ATHLETICS
Usain Bolt is adamant that this season will be a low-key one for him even if Tyson Gay and others pursue their ambitions of not only beating him but trying to break his world sprint records. Bolt coasted to an easy success against a makeshift field to win over 200 metres at the Shanghai IAAF Diamond League meeting just four days after posting the world's fastest 100m time of 9.86 seconds in Daegu, South Korea.
