1907: Northamptonshire were bowled out for 12 by Gloucestershire at Gloucester, still the all-time lowest innings score in a first-class match between two counties.
1952: Denis Compton hit his 100th first-class century and went on to make another 23 tons before retiring in 1964.
2000: Niall Quinn equalled Frank Stapleton's record of 20 international goals as the Republic of Ireland beat South Africa during the Nike Cup in the United States.
2004: Manchester United completed the signing of Gabriel Heinze from Paris St Germain.
2005: Darren Gough claimed his second England hat-trick as the national side warmed up for the NatWest Series against Australia by beating Hampshire by 153 runs.
2006: Jamaica's Asafa Powell equalled his own world 100 metres record of 9.77 seconds, which he shared with American Justin Gatlin, at the Norwich Union British Grand Prix in Gateshead.
2007: Michael Vaughan became the most successful Test captain in England's history as his side beat West Indies by 60 runs in the third Test at Old Trafford. It was Vaughan's 21st Test win as captain, overtaking Peter May's record.
2010 Nelson Mandela will not attend the opening ceremony of the World Cup after his great-granddaughter was killed in a car crash

Britain's Bradley Wiggins retained the leader's yellow jersey in the Dauphine Libere, the week-long traditional Tour de France tune-up. The Team Sky rider, 31, finished just behind French stage winner Christophe Kern of Team Europcar who took the line in a summit finish at Les Gets.
MOTOR CYCLING
Isle of Man great John McGuiness claimed his 17th title at the festival on Friday with victory in the Pokerstars Senior TT. The English veteran added to his success in this year's Superbike event by holding off the challenges of Guy Martin and Bruce Anstey on his Honda.
