DIVING
World champion Tom Daley had to be content with second
place on his return to 10-metre platform competition for the first
time since the death of his father. Daley produced an inconsistent
performance as he was easily beaten by Peter Waterfield, who
impressively defended his British Gas National Diving Championships
crown with a comfortable buffer of 59.45 points.
MOTOR CYCLING
Casey Stoner took his fourth race win of the season
and the lead in the MotoGP World Championship after title rival Jorge
Lorenzo crashed out in the rain at Silverstone. Repsol Honda rider
Stoner rode an almost faultless race from pole position to take his
third successive win and now leads defending champion Lorenzo by 18
points in the championship standings.
Carlos Checa extended his lead at the top of the
Superbike World Championship after taking a second consecutive double
win in Sunday's round at Misano in Rimini. The Spaniard and his
Althea Ducati have been the class of the field so far this season and
he registered his seventh and eighth victories to open up a lead of
72 points over defending champion Max Biaggi at the top of the standings.
MOTOR RACING
Audi produced a dream end to a tough weekend as their
sole surviving car powered to a thrilling victory at the 79th Le Mans
24 Hour race. After the R18 TDIs of Allan McNish and Mike
Rockenfeller were involved in two massive shunts in the opening eight
hours of the race on Saturday, the sister car of Andre Lotterer,
Marcel Fassler and Benoit Treluyer fended off Peugeot's stern
challenge to secure the team's 10th win at this event in the past 12 years. |
