On This Day in Sport (15 June 2011):

1982: Hungary beat El Salvador 10-1 at Elche, Spain, to register the highest score in the final stages of the World Cup. Hungary were 3-0 up at the interval and added seven more goals to become the first side to score 10 times in a match in the finals of the competition. Laszlo Kiss, who came on in the 55th minute, scored a hat-trick and became the first substitute to score three times in the finals.
1996: England went top of their Euro 96 group after beating Scotland 2-0 at Wembley. Paul Gascoigne scored a spectacular clinching goal after Alan Shearer had put England ahead, and David Seaman had saved a penalty from Scotland captain Gary McAllister.
2000: Tottenham agreed to sell French star David Ginola to Premiership rivals Aston Villa for £3million.
2004: Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy scored a late equaliser as Holland snatched a 1-1 draw against Germany in their Euro 2004 group match in Porto.
2006: Late goals from Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard gave England an unconvincing 2-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago.
2010 Franz Beckenbauer claims "the English have gone backwards into the bad old days of kick and rush" after watching the USA World Cup 1-1 draw result.
