ATHLETICS
Jessica Ennis believes her thrilling heptathlon victory at Sunday's Hypomeeting in Gotzis was the perfect preparation to challenge for the European Championship title in July. Ennis trumped every one of the major rivals who will line up against her when the championships begin in Barcelona on July 27 including Olympic gold medallist Nataliya Dobrynska and Tatyana Chernova, the Beijing bronze medallist.
MOTOR RACING
A consummate drive from Dario Franchitti saw the Scotsman claim his second Indianapolis 500 victory in fine style. The Team Ganassi driver's main competition came in the form of the Penske pair of Helio Castroneves and Will Power, but the Briton was able to hold the lead through most of the opening half of the race.
CYCLING
Gustav Larsson tasted success on the final stage of the Giro d'Italia but the day belonged to Ivan Basso after he secured the overall victory for a second time in Verona. Larsson (Saxo Bank) blitzed around the 15.3km time trial course in 20 minutes 19 seconds, two seconds quicker than HTC-Columbia's Marco Pinotti, with Alexandre Vinokourov 17 seconds behind in third.
ROWING
Greg Searle completed a victorious return to international racing as Great Britain opened the 2010 World Cup season with an impressive total haul of nine gold medals. Searle, the 1992 Olympic champion, is back in national colours after a decade in retirement and targeting gold at London 2012, when he will be 40. The veteran oarsman sat in the key six seat and his power helped Britain's re-jigged men's eight storm to a comprehensive victory in Sunday's final. Katherine Grainger and Anna Watkins won two gold medals, in the double scull and then an hour later as part of the quad that beat world champions Ukraine.
YACHTING
Britain's sailors have won five medals at the World Cup sailing event in Holland. After 470 duo Nic Asher and Elliot Willis won gold on Saturday, Sunday saw two silvers and two bronzes at the Delta Lloyd Regatta in Medemblik. Windsurfer Nick Dempsey and the match-racing trio of Lucy Macgregor, Nicky Muller and Ally Martin finished second in their competitions while there were third places for Bryony Shaw in the RS:X windsurfing and Helena Lucas in 2.4mR Paralympic class.
