On This Day in Sport (01 June 2010):

1899: Trent Bridge became the fourth English Test cricket ground when it hosted the England v Australia Test.
1953: Jockey Gordon Richards was knighted by the Queen. He showed his gratitude six days later by beating the Queen's horse, Aureole, into second place in the Derby.
1983: Lester Piggott rode his record ninth Derby winner, Teenoso.
2001: Steve Bruce was named as Crystal Palace's eighth manager in 10 years. He stayed in the job less than seven months before moving to Birmingham.
2002: A plane carrying disgraced former South Africa cricket captain Hansie Cronje crashed in Western Cape province, killing all on board.
2004: Porto announced they had released Jose Mourinho from his contract following talks with Chelsea. Rafael Benitez left Valencia after turning down a new contract, eventually moving to Liverpool.
2005: Chelsea were fined £300,000 and given a suspended three-point deduction after being found guilty of breaking Premier League rules in a tapping-up row over Arsenal's Ashley Cole. Cole was also fined £100,000 and Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho £200,000.

ATHLETICS
Defending champion Mo Farah set a British road record to win Monday's Bupa London 10,000m. Farah clocked 27 minutes and 44 seconds as he outsprinted world record holder Micah Kogo to clinch victory by five seconds from the Kenyan in the capital.
SWIMMING
Eleanor Simmonds, Charlotte Henshaw, Sam Hynd and Nyree Lewis all set new world records as the strength of Paralympic swimming in Great Britain was underlined at the BT Paralympic World Cup in Manchester on Monday. The achievements of the quartet were especially notable given they are all in full training for the IPC World Championships in August in Eindhoven. Double Paralympic champion Simmonds produced a storming second 100metres to set a new mark in the 200m individual medley, the first event of the afternoon at the Manchester Aquatics Centre.
