1930: Former Lancashire pace bowler Brian Statham, who spearheaded the England attack with Fred Trueman in the 1950s, was born. He won 70 Test caps and died in 2000.
1971: David Duckham became the first player to score six tries in a tour match for the Lions, achieving the feat against West Coast-Buller at Greymouth in New Zealand.
1982: Manchester United midfielder Norman Whiteside became the youngest player to compete in the finals of the World Cup. He was 17 years and 41 days old when he appeared for Northern Ireland against Yugoslavia.
1999: Australia reached the final of the World Cup with a thrilling win over South Africa at Edgbaston. Steve Waugh's side triumphed on net run rate after Allan Donald was dramatically run out with just two balls left and the scores level on 213.
2001: Retief Goosen missed a two-foot putt to win the US Open on the final green in Tulsa. The South African eventually won the title the following day after an 18-hole play-off with American Mark Brooks.
2003: David Beckham's ?25million sale to Real Madrid was confirmed by Manchester United.
2004: Martin Gleeson was banned for four months and Sean Long three months while both fined ?7,500 plus costs of ?2,205 each after a Rugby Football League hearing into betting irregularities.
2010 Tournament favourites Spain are stunned by Switzerland smash and grab raid in the first major shock of the World Cup finals in Durban

SWIMMING
Double Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington produced a demonstration of world-class swimming to win the 800metres freestyle at the British Gas ASA National Championships in Sheffield despite still being in heavy training that sees her churn out 70,000m a week in the pool. The 22-year-old has also had to overcome recurring illness that affected her training but she still won by 20m in eight minutes 24.77 seconds ahead of Eleanor Faulkner and Hannah Miley.
CYCLING
Dutchman Steven Kruijswijk won the sixth stage of the Tour de Suisse after breaking clear in the final stretch. The Rabobank rider finished the 157-kilometre ride from Tobel-Tagerschen to Triesenberg-Malbun in Liechtenstein nine seconds ahead of second-placed Levi Leipheimer of RadioShack.
