1899: Trent Bridge became the fourth English Test
cricket ground when it hosted the England v Australia Test.
1953: Jockey Gordon Richards was knighted by the
Queen. He showed his gratitude six days later by beating the Queen's
horse, Aureole, into second place in the Derby.
1983: Lester Piggott rode his record ninth Derby
winner, Teenoso.
2001: Steve Bruce was named as Crystal Palace's eighth
manager in 10 years. He stayed in the job less than seven months
before moving to Birmingham.
2002: A plane carrying disgraced former South Africa
cricket captain Hansie Cronje crashed in Western Cape province,
killing all on board.
2004: Porto announced they had released Jose Mourinho
from his contract following talks with Chelsea. Rafael Benitez left
Valencia after turning down a new contract, eventually moving to Liverpool.
2005: Chelsea were fined £300,000 and given a
suspended three-point deduction after being found guilty of breaking
Premier League rules in a tapping-up row over Arsenal's Ashley Cole.
Cole was also fined £100,000 and Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho £200,000. |
