MOTOR CYCLING
Swan Yamaha's Tommy Hill recorded the first double
race win of the season by dominating the MCE Insurance British
Superbike round at Knockhill. Hill won both races at round five at
the Scottish circuit after starting from pole position to close the
gap over series leader Shane Byrne to 52 points. Samsung Crescent
Suzuki's John Hopkins led into the first turn but Hill took over the
lead on the opening lap and was never headed. Max Biaggi won the
second race of the Superbike World Championship round in Spain to
close the gap on series leader Carlos Checa to 43 points. Biaggi had
lost the battle for the first race to Marco Melandri but still gained
ground on Checa who crashed out of the opener at Motorland Aragon.
Althea Ducati's Checa recovered from that fall to finish third second
time out at the seventh of the season's 13 rounds.
ATHLETICS

the European Team Championships in Stockholm. Helen Clitheroe, the
European Indoor champion over 3,000m, produced her lifetime best in
the 5,000m as she came in third behind Spain's Delores Checa while
Gareth Warburton clocked a season's best in an impressive outing in
the 800m. Andy Baddeley suffered disappointment as he left his
finishing kick too late in the 3,000m.

stage after finishing the 32.1-kilometre race in Schaffhausen in a
time of 41.01 minutes, but it was Leipheimer who was the
