On This Day in Sport (21 July 2008):

1884: Lord's cricket ground hosted its first Test match when it staged the second match in the series between England and Australia. England won by an innings and five runs.
1964: Tottenham forward John White was killed when he was struck by lightning while sheltering from a storm during a round of golf on the links at Crews Hill, Enfield.
1968: Arnold Palmer became the first man to win one million US dollars on the US golf tour when he tied for second place in the US PGA Championship at Pecan Valley, Texas.
1991: David Platt completed his £5.5million move from Aston Villa to Bari. He moved to Juventus a season later for £6.5million and then joined Sampdoria for £5.2million in 1993. Two years later he was back in England with Arsenal after a £4.75million switch. His total transfer fees reached £22.15million - making him then Britain's most expensive player.
2003: Damien Duff confirmed his #17million move to Chelsea.
2004: Newcastle completed the signing of Patrick Kluivert from Barcelona.
2006: Chelsea agreed a fee with Valencia for the sale of Spanish full-back Asier del Horno after just one season in England.
2007: Former England striker Robbie Fowle agreed to join Cardiff on a two-year contract.
