ATHLETICS
Briton Andy Turner won gold in the 110m hurdles at the European Championships on Friday. The 29-year-old from Nottingham followed in four-time winner Colin Jackson's footsteps by claiming victory in 13.28secs in Barcelona, a season's best and just 0.01 outside his personal best.
Great Britain grabbed two European Championship medals in the men's 400m on Friday, but not the gold. Michael Bingham claimed the silver and Martyn Rooney the bronze for Team GB but both were beaten by Belgium's Kevin Borlee. Borlee, one of two twins in the final, stormed through in the final 20m to cross the line in 45.08secs. Bingham pipped his team-mate to second place, both men being awarded a finishing time of 45.23.
Christian Malcolm won silver for Great Britain as Christophe Lemaitre completed the 100-200m double at the European Championships. Malcolm led for the majority of the 200m final but Lemaitre, winner of the 100m on Wednesday night, took gold on the dip at the finish line. He won in a time of 20.37secs, with Malcom just one hundredth of a second back. France's Martial Mbandjock took bronze, just as he did in the 100m, with the second Briton, Marlon Devonish, fourth in 20.62 - not a bad effort considering he was suffering from an upset stomach.Ireland's Paul Hession was sixth in 20.71.
Jenny Meadows won bronze for GB over 800m in the European Championships in Barcelona. The British star unusually opted to run from the front in Friday's final but she was overhauled as she entered the home straight as Mariya Savinova took gold for Russia in 1min 58.22secs. Meadows is usually renowned for her strong finish but on this occasion she was hanging on as she crossed the line in 1:59.39.
Briton Perri Shakes-Drayton won bronze in the 400m hurdles at the European Championships on Friday night. The Londoner smashed her personal best by more than half a second as a strong finish saw her grab a place on the podium in Barcelona. Shakes-Drayton, last year's European under-23 champion, finished in 54.18secs and was delighted to find out moments later that she had won bronze.
EQUESTRIAN
Great Britain confirmed their re-emergence as a major force in world team showjumping by recording an emphatic Meydan FEI Nations Cup victory at Hickstead. It was Britain's first Nations Cup win for two years, sending confidence levels soaring heading into next Friday's Dublin finale. Overall leaders France though, did enough to retain their title with a fourth-placed finish.
