1925: Austria beat Germany 6-3 in the first international handball match.
1935: Malcolm Campbell became the first man to travel at 300mph on land when he powered his Bluebird to a new world record of 301.13mph at Bonneville Flats, Utah.
1950: Giuseppe `Nino' Farina won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza in an Alfa Romeo to capture the world title and become the first winner of the newly-instituted drivers' championship.
1972: Northern Ireland's Mary Peters pipped West Germany's Heidi Rosendahl to the gold medal in the pentathlon at the Munich Olympics. The result was confirmed only in the final event, the 200metres, which Peters ran in 24.08secs - had she been 0.1secs slower she would have missed out.
1999: Former England boss Bobby Robson was unveiled as the new manager of Newcastle at the age of 66.
2003: Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Bosnich had his appeal against a nine-month ban for improper conduct and breach of doping regulations rejected.
2004: England's World Cup-winning coach Sir Clive Woodward announced he would be leaving rugby after the 2005 summer Lions Tour to New Zealand.
2006: Darren Clarke and Lee Westwood were named as wild cards for European Ryder Cup team.
2006: Andre Agassi retired from tennis after being knocked out of the US Open by Benjamin Becker.

CYCLING
Michael Albasini sprinted to victory on stage 13 of the Vuelta a Espana after a breakaway was allowed to contest the stage win. The Swiss HTC-Highroad rider kicked early on the finishing straight and held off the attentions of Eros Capecchi (Liquigas) and Daniel Moreno (Katusha) to take an impressive victory in Ponferrada.
BASKETBALL
Great Britain put up a better fight on day three of the European Championships in Lithuania but could not deliver an upset against defending champions Spain. Needing to show some fight after a rough 90-61 loss to Turkey on Thursday, Britain recovered from a 9-2 Spanish start to stay close through the first two periods, trailing by just 38-32 at half-time.
ROWING
Great Britain's women's eight picked up a bronze medal at the Rowing World Championships in Bled, Slovenia on Friday as they secured a London 2012 berth. Tom Aggar picked up the gold in the AS single scull as the current Paralympic champion easily retained the gold medal he won in Slovenia last year.
