1987: Mike Tyson beat the IBF champion Tony Tucker on points over 12 rounds in Las Vegas to become the first undisputed world heavyweight champion since Leon Spinks in 1978.
1992: Snooker star Ronnie O'Sullivan's record run of 38 consecutive match wins in ranking tournaments was ended by Sean Storey.
1999: Arsenal paid £1million to Real Madrid for Croatian striker Davor Suker, the Golden Boot winner at the World Cup in 1998.
2003: David Beckham made his Real Madrid debut in a 4-0 win over Dragon XI at the Workers Stadium, Beijing.
2004: Boudewijn Zenden signed for Middlesbrough on a one-year deal, having spent a season on loan from Chelsea. He joined Liverpool 12 months later.
2005: Ferrari signed Felipe Massa from Sauber as their second driver for the 2006 Formula One season, replacing Rubens Barrichello.
2006: Leeds owner Ken Bates reported his former club Chelsea to the Football Association, Premier League and FIFA after claiming they recruited two Elland Road youngsters by making illegal approaches. The West Yorkshire club eventually accepted a settlement fee.

ATHLETICS
Great Britain's Chris Tomlinson was denied silver at the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona by just one centimetre in the final round of the long jump. Great Britain completed their most successful European Championships in terms of medals won with silver in the final event, the men's 4x400metres relay. Conrad Williams, Michael Bingham, Robert Tobin and Martyn Rooney just failed to catch Russia on the line but added to the bronze medals won by the women's team and Chris Tomlinson in the long jump.
Great Britain's women's 4x400m quartet bagged the bronze medal at the European Championships as Russia cruised to a commanding victory.
Blanka Vlasic added the European title to the world crown she won last year in a thrilling high jump final in Barcelona's Olympic Stadium on Sunday night. The Croatian had looked to be struggling when she failed her first attempts at 1.95metres and 1.97m but upped her game when it mattered to clear a championship record 2.03m and take gold. Sweden's Emma Green won the silver and Germany's Ariane Friedrich, who had looked to be cruising until first failure came at 2.01m, the bronze. Switzerland's Viktor Rothlin won the men's marathon at the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona on Sunday morning. The 35-year-old, who claimed silver in Gothenburg four years ago, clocked a time of two hours 15.31 minutes to finish comfortably ahead of Spain's Juan Martinez and Dimitri Safronov, of Russia. Lee Merrien was the best-placed athlete representing Great Britain, finishing eighth in a time of 2:20:42.
HOCKEY
England were forced to settle for a 3-3 draw against Olympic silver medallists Spain in their second Champions Trophy match in Monchengladbach on Sunday.
MOTOR CYCLING
Cal Crutchlow took his first ever World Superbike wins as British riders dominated to the delight of a huge crowd at Silverstone. With seven British riders on the grid, the large crowd was hopeful of some home success and Crutchlow delivered with a fantastic double win aboard his Sterilgarda Yamaha.
