On This Day in Sport (09 August 2010):

1984: British decathlete Daley Thompson set a new world record of 8,847 points to retain his Olympic title in Los Angeles.
1990: Joe Mercer, who guided Manchester City to the league title in 1968, died aged 76.
2000: Italian striker Benito Carbone signed a four-year contract for Premier League Bradford City on a free transfer from Aston Villa for a reported salary of £40,000 a week.
2002: Bradford, now with debts of some £36million and in administration, were granted permission to play their opening game of the season against Wolves after the Football League received assurances over a proposed financial rescue package.
2003: Manchester United youngster Jimmy Davis was killed in a car crash on his way to play on loan for Watford against Coventry. The game was postponed as a mark of respect for the 21-year-old.
2004: West Brom striker Lee Hughes was jailed for six years after being found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving following a trial at Coventry Crown Court.
2009 : Former England manager Sir Bobby Robson died on Friday at the age of 76.

ATHLETICS
Justin Gatlin has won his second 100 metres race since returning from a four-year doping ban, claiming victory at the Ergo World challenge meeting in Tallinn, Estonia on Sunday. The former world and Olympic champion, who was banned for four years in 2006 after testing positive for excessive testosterone, clocked 10.17 seconds to finish ahead of fellow American Rubin Williams.
MOTOR CYCLING
Kawasaki rider Tom Sykes made a triumphant return to British Superbike Championship with a double victory at Brands Hatch. The Yorkshireman took a break from the World Superbike series to dominate Sunday's races after coming fifth in Saturday's opening race won by Alastair Seeley aboard the Relentless Suzuki.
BASKETBALL
Great Britain passed a big test on the road to the European Championships and did it in dramatic fashion as they beat Macedonia 104-96 in overtime in Newcastle. As they did in their opening qualifier in Hungary, Britain wasted a big lead to trail in the fourth quarter, but Luol Deng's dramatic three-pointer tied it six seconds from time and they then blew away a tiring Macedonia in the extra period.
HOCKEY
England suffered a 4-0 defeat to Australia in the final of the Champions Trophy in Monchengladbach on Sunday. Luke Doerner's fierce penalty corner gave the Australians a sixth-minute lead and Des Abbot added a second a minute later to leave England facing an uphill task. Jason Wilson added a third for Australia in the 14th minute and, after rain delayed the start of the second half by almost an hour, world player of the year Jamie Dwyer made it four to give Australia their third consecutive Champions Trophy title.
TRIATHLON
Ukrainian Yuliya Sapunova pipped Great Britain's Jodie Swallow to the finish line in Hungary to score her first World Cup triathlon win. American Sara McLarty led through the swim and bike ride in Tiszaujvaros, holding off the challenge of local favourite Margit Vanek in the water before opening up a 90-second advantage on the chasing group.
