1868: The 17-year-old Tom Morris registered the first
hole-in-one in the Open when he aced the 166-yard eighth hole at
Prestwick. Tom went on to beat his father, Old Tom, by three strokes
and become the youngest winner of the championship.
1891: Wolves' John Heath scored the first penalty in
the Football League, netting against Accrington.
1905: The Isle of Man RAC Tourist Trophy, the oldest
surviving motorcar race in the world, was first contested.
1955: Kidderminster Harriers and Brierley Hill
Alliance became the first sides to play an FA Cup tie under floodlights.
1963: George Best made his debut for Manchester United
in a 1-0 win over West Brom at Old Trafford.
2003: Paula Radcliffe broke the world five kilometre
road record, winning the Flora Light Women's Challenge at Hyde Park
in London with a time of 14 minutes 51 seconds, bettering the old
mark by three seconds. |
