On This Day in Sport (19 September 2011):

1922: Czechoslovakian athlete Emil Zatopek was born. An outstanding distance runner, he won the 10,000 metres at the 1948 Olympic Games in London and at Helsinki four years later took gold in the 5,000m, 10,000m and marathon. At his peak, he won 69 consecutive events at all distances and set 18 world records from 5,000m to 25km. He died in November 2000 at Prague Military Hospital after a long illness.
1999: Alan Shearer scored five goals in Newcastle's 8-0 Premier League rout of Sheffield Wednesday.
2000: Britain's three-day event team of Jeanette Brakewell on Over To You, Leslie Law on Shear H20, Pippa Funnell on Supreme Rock and Ian Stark on Jaybee won silver at the Olympic Games in Sydney, while cyclists Bradley Wiggins, Chris Newton, Bryan Steel and Paul Manning took bronze in the 4,000m team pursuit.
2003: Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski lost their opening rubbers as Great Britain fell 2-0 behind in their Davis Cup tie against Morocco in Casablanca, en route to a 3-2 defeat.
2004: Steve Harmison became the first England player to pull out of the controversial winter tour to Zimbabwe.
2005: Shaun Udal, at the age of 36, earned a shock England recall for the winter squad to tour Pakistan. He made four Test appearances during the tours of Pakistan and India, having previously only played for England in one-day games.
2006: Randy Lerner completed his takeover of Aston Villa, succeeding Doug Ellis as chairman after acquiring nearly 90% of the club.

EQUESTRIAN
Nick Skelton won an individual bronze medal for Great Britain on the final day of the FEI Showjumping European Championships in Madrid. Skelton's efforts on Sunday follow on from the bronze he helped GB win in the team event on Friday, along with Ben Maher, John Whitaker and Guy Williams
CYCLING
Mark Cavendish sprinted to victory on the streets of London as the Tour of Britain came to a close. The Manxman led home HTC-Highroad team-mate Mark Renshaw in the third one-two finish for the duo and the second win for Cavendish during the race.
ROWING
Britain's Kathryn Twyman and Andrea Dennis maintained their recent form to take silver in the lightweight women's double scull at the European Championships in Bulgaria. The pair won gold in the lightweight women's quadruple scull at the recent World Championships in Slovenia and followed that up with a creditable silver in Plovdiv on Sunday
MOTOR CYCLING
Casey Stoner took another significant step towards his second MotoGP world title after easing to a crushing victory at the Aragon Grand Prix in Spain. The Repsol Honda rider was the class of the field in practice and qualifying and backed up that pace today as he finished over eight seconds clear of team-mate Dani Pedrosa to register his eighth win in 14 races this season.
ATHLETICS
Martin Mathathi set a new course record in the men's race and fellow Kenyan Lucy Kabuu dominated the women's event as near-perfect conditions led to fast times across the elite events at the Great North Run. Mathathi took nine seconds off Zersenay Tadese's 2005 record of 59 minutes 5 seconds with a storming run as the Kenyan pulled away in the second half of the event.
