On This Day in Sport (24 September 2011):

1776: The St Leger, the oldest of the five Classic races, was run for the first time at Doncaster. The race, which had only five runners, was won by the 2-1 favourite Allabucilia.
1967: Jim Bakken kicked an NFL record seven field goals in a game while playing for St Louis against Pittsburgh.
1975: Phil Bennett scored an international rugby union record 34 points for Wales against Japan in Tokyo.
1988: At the Seoul Olympics Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson `won' the 100metres final in a world record time of 9.79seconds. The time was expunged from the records and the gold medal taken from him when drug tests proved he had taken performance-boosting anabolic steroids.
1989: Europe retained the Ryder Cup following a 14-14 draw with the United States at The Belfry - only the second tied match in the cup's history. American Tom Kite registered the biggest individual win in the competition over 18 holes, beating Howard Clark 8&7.
2002: England batsman Graham Thorpe, days after being recalled to the England squad for the Ashes series in Australia, pulled out of the tour.
2006: European won the Ryder Cup for the fifth time in six matches with a record-equalling 18.5-9.5 victory at the K Club, near Dublin

CYCLING
Briton Lucy Garner sprinted to a superb victory in Copenhagen to claim the junior title at cycling's Road World Championships. The 17-year-old moved to the head of the pack before unleashing a powerful kick in the final metres to take an emphatic victory and claim the first gold medal of the championships for Great Britain.
