ATHLETICS
Paula Radcliffe had mixed feelings despite achieving
the Olympic qualification time after coming third in the Berlin
Marathon. The 37-year-old crossed the line in two hours 23 minutes 46
seconds, behind Kenya's Florence Kiplagat and Irina Mikitenko of
Germany. It was the former world record holder's first marathon since
coming fourth in New York in November 2009.
Kenya's Patrick Makau set
a new world record as he successfully defended his Berlin marathon
title, with former record holder Haile Gebrselassie dramatically
stopping for a minute during the race. Makau clocked a stunning
unofficial time of two hours three minutes 38 seconds, 21 seconds
quicker than the time set by Gebrselassie over the same course in 2008.
CYCLING
Britain's Nicole Cooke narrowly missed out on a medal
in the UCI Road World Championships women's road race in Copenhagen.
The Olympic champion came fourth as Italian champion Giorgia Bronzini
retained her title with a time of three hours 21 minutes and 28 seconds. |
