1952: Speed king John Cobb died when his jet-engined
Crusader disintegrated on Loch Ness.
1971: Chelsea inflicted an 8-0 defeat on Luxembourg's
Jeunesse Hautcharage in the first leg of their UEFA Cup Winners' Cup
match. The Blues won the second leg, at Stamford Bridge, 13-0 on
their way to a European club record aggregate victory of 21-0.
1981: Bill Shankly died. The Liverpool manager had
taken the Reds out of Division Two in 1962 and transformed them into
one of the most famous sides in the world.
2000: Britain's Shirley Robertson won the sailing gold
medal in the Europe class at the Sydney Olympics, as did Ben Ainslie
in the Open Laser class.
2002: Europe regained the Ryder Cup by beating the
United States at The Belfry, Ireland's Paul McGinley sinking a
dramatic 18-foot putt on the final green to halve his crucial singles
match with Jim Furyk.
2004: Wales Rugby Union officials appointed Gareth
Thomas as captain for the following two years.
2005: Roy Keane revealed he planned to quit Manchester
United at the end of the season. His exit came in January, followed
by his retirement after playing for Celtic. He now manages Sunderland. |
