1990: Manchester United's Steve Bruce became the first top-flight player to be red-carded under the new professional foul rule, in a match against Luton.
2000: European champions Real Madrid reported they were more than £165million in debt.
2002: Former England cricket captain and opening batsman Geoffrey Boycott confirmed he had been diagnosed with cancer after tests on a lump in his neck.
2006: Thomas Bjorn let rip at Ian Woosnam after Europe's captain opted for Lee Westwood instead of the Dane as his second wild card for the defence of the Ryder Cup at the K Club. Bjorn described his relationship with Woosnam as "completely dead", calling the captain "barmy"
