1880: The Kennington Oval became the first cricket ground in England to host a Test match. England beat Australia by five wickets, with WG Grace scoring the first Test century on the ground.
1990: England's first professional cricket captain, Sir Len Hutton, died at the age of 74.
1991: James Warring took only 24 seconds to knock out James Prichard in their world cruiserweight contest, which was the fastest knockout in world boxing title fight history.
1998: Media mogul Rupert Murdoch's BSkyB confirmed they were in talks to buy Manchester United, planning an estimated £600million bid to take a controlling interest at Old Trafford. The move was eventually blocked by Government following a recommendation by the Monopolies and Mergers Commission.
2004: Newcastle confirmed Graeme Souness as manager.
2005: Bradford forward Jamie Peacock was appointed Great Britain's new rugby league captain.
2006: England beat Macedonia 1-0 in Skopje to make it two wins from two in their Euro 2008 qualifying campaign and extend Steve McClaren's 100 per cent start as manager to three games

RALLYING
Citroen's Sebastien Loeb collected his sixth win of the World Rally Championship season at the Rally Australia, closing the gap on title leader Mikko Hirvonen to a single point. Loeb edged out the Finn, who finished 12.5seconds back as runner-up - with overnight leader Dani Sordo, also of Citroen, finishing third. Loeb's first win since April was his 53rd in the competition and tees up a thrilling finale to the season with two rallies to go.
MOUNTAIN BIKING
British cyclist Steve Peat won downhill gold in the Mountain Biking World Championships in Canberra. Peat clocked a finishing time of two hours 30 minutes and 33 seconds to see off South Africa's Greg Minnaar and Australian Michael Hannah, who came second and third respectively in a tight finish. Peat's fellow Briton Gee Atherton came in sixth, 3.92 seconds back - while Marc Beaumont (23), Brendan Fairclough (24) and Josh Bryceland (28) fared less well.
YACHTING
Reunited British crew Paul Brotherton and Mark Asquith claimed a silver medal at sailing's 49er European Championship in Zadar, Croatia. Contesting their first event together in six years after re-forming their partnership, Brotherton and Asquith took silver behind Italian brothers Pietro and Gianfranco Sibello. The Austrian crew of Nico Delle Karth and Nikolaus Resch, whom Brotherton coached up until the World Championships in July, completed the podium line-up in third.
