RALLYING
Citroen's Sebastien Loeb collected his sixth win of
the World Rally Championship season at the Rally Australia, closing
the gap on title leader Mikko Hirvonen to a single point. Loeb edged
out the Finn, who finished 12.5seconds back as runner-up - with
overnight leader Dani Sordo, also of Citroen, finishing third. Loeb's
first win since April was his 53rd in the competition and tees up a
thrilling finale to the season with two rallies to go.
MOUNTAIN BIKING
British cyclist Steve Peat
won downhill gold in the Mountain Biking World Championships in
Canberra. Peat clocked a finishing time of two hours 30 minutes and
33 seconds to see off South Africa's Greg Minnaar and Australian
Michael Hannah, who came second and third respectively in a tight
finish. Peat's fellow Briton Gee Atherton came in sixth, 3.92 seconds
back - while Marc Beaumont (23), Brendan Fairclough (24) and Josh
Bryceland (28) fared less well.
YACHTING
Reunited British crew Paul Brotherton and Mark Asquith
claimed a silver medal at sailing's 49er European Championship in
Zadar, Croatia. Contesting their first event together in six years
after re-forming their partnership, Brotherton and Asquith took
silver behind Italian brothers Pietro and Gianfranco Sibello. The
Austrian crew of Nico Delle Karth and Nikolaus Resch, whom Brotherton
coached up until the World Championships in July, completed the
podium line-up in third. |
