On This Day in Sport (04 October 2011):
1895: The first US Open Golf Championship took place
at Newport, Rhode Island. The winner was English-born Horace Rawlins
with a total score of 173 from rounds of 91 and 82.
1933: Gordon Richards rode all six winners on the card
on the opening day of two at Chepstow. Richards, later to be
knighted, had won the last race of the previous day at Wolverhampton
and rode the first five winners on the second day at Chepstow. But
his run ended at 12 successive victories when he finished third in
the 4.30pm race.
1989: Former England Test cricketer Norman Yardley
died at the age of 74.
1991: Brian Clough's former right-hand man Peter
Taylor died aged 62 while on holiday in Majorca. Taylor had worked
with Clough at Hartlepool, Derby and Brighton before they ended their partnership.
2001: The Government scrapped plans to hold the World
Athletics Championships in London in 2005.
2004: Manchester United's plc board confirmed they had
received a "preliminary approach" regarding a "possible
offer" for the company, thought to be from American tycoon
Malcolm Glazer.
2005: Glamorgan's Simon Jones was ruled out of
England's tour of Pakistan after failing to recover from an ankle
injury sustained in the fourth Ashes Test at Trent Bridge.
2006: UEFA's executive committee confirmed The City of
Manchester Stadium would host the 2008 UEFA Cup final. |
