ATHLETICS
Kenya's David Lekuta Rudisha ran the fastest 800
metres in the world this year - and a national record - in Rieti on
Sunday. The African completed the two laps in one minute, 42.01
seconds at the Italian venue, finishing ahead of fellow Kenyan and
2007 world champion Alfred Kirwa Yego (1:42.67) and South Africa's
Mbulaeni Mulaudzi (1:42.86). Asafa Powell won the 100m in 9.99sec
with Jamaican countryman Nesta Carter second in 10.08sec and
Britain's Simeon Williamson third in 10.18sec.
EQUESTRIAN
Oliver Townend completed British eventing's most
prestigious double - and landed himself another bumper pay-day in the
process. Townend and Carousel Quest captured the Land Rover Burghley
Horse Trials title just four months after winning Badminton on his
other star horse, Flint Curtis. The Yorkshireman became only the
third rider since 1988 to scoop both top prizes in one year,
emulating Ginny Leng and latterly Pippa Funnell, who achieved it six
years ago.
MOTOR CYCLING
Valentino Rossi led home a Fiat Yamaha one-two as he
stretched his lead in the FIM MotoGP World Championship to 30 points
over team-mate Jorge Lorenzo with victory at the San Marino Grand
Prix. Rossi and Lorenzo were well clear of the Repsol Honda of Dani
Pedrosa at the chequered flag at Misano as the Spaniard's team-mate
Andrea Dovizioso came in fourth. |
