1926: Baseball legend Babe Ruth hit three home runs
for the New York Yankees in a World Series game.
1959: A record 92,706 fans watched the fifth game of
the World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago
White Sox at the Los Angeles Coliseum.
1969: Golfing legend Walter Hagan, one of America's
most flamboyant players, died aged 76.
1985: Nigel Mansell, driving a Williams, took his
first Formula One Grand Prix win in the European round at Brands Hatch.
1997: Barry Town's Garry Lloyd became the first
non-league player to be selected for the full Wales international
squad when he was called into the squad for the World Cup qualifier
against Belgium.
2002: Captain David Beckham scored a last-minute
free-kick to secure a 2-2 draw against Greece at Old Trafford and
book England's place in the World Cup in the Far East.
2005: Former Wales and British and Irish Lions hooker
Jeff Young died at the age of 62 following a long illness.
2006: Shaharyar Khan resigned as chairman of the
Pakistan Cricket Board.
2010 Liverpool will sell the club to the owners of the
Boston Red Sox subject to Premier League approval and the resolution
