1960: Blackpool's derby against Bolton was the first
Football League match to be televised live.
1975: A week after reaching the US Open semi-finals as
an 18-year-old, Martina Navratilova defected from her native
Czechoslovakia to the west and was granted political asylum in the
United States.
1990: At 19 years and one month old, Pete Sampras
became the youngest winner of the US Open. He beat Andre Agassi 6-4
6-3 6-2 in the final.
2001: Venus Williams beat her sister, Serena, 6-2 6-4
to win the US Open at Flushing Meadows in the first grand slam final
to feature two sisters since 1884.
2002: England's cricket side saw the last day of the
fourth Test against India at The Oval completely washed out by rain.
This ensured England went into the Ashes unbeaten all year.
2003: Manchester United confirmed Peter Kenyon - now
at Chelsea - would be leaving as chief executive.
2004: Tim Henman's four-set win over Dominik Hrbaty
took him into the US Open semi-finals for the first time in his career. |
