1893: Liverpool beat Middlesbrough Ironopolis to claim their first win in the Football League. The Reds have since won more league titles (18) than any other club.
1973: England legend Ian Botham played his first game for Somerset when he turned out in a Sunday League game against Sussex at Hove.
1980: John Arlott, the `voice of cricket', commentated on his last Test match on the occasion of the Lord's centenary match between England and Australia.
2000: Michael Owen came off the bench to score an 86th-minute equaliser in England's 1-1 draw with France in Paris.
2001: John Daly secured his first tournament win for six years with victory in the BMW International in Germany.
