1895: The original FA Cup trophy was stolen from a shop window in Birmingham where it had been on display courtesy of holders Aston Villa.
1998: Francis Baron became the Rugby Football Union's first chief executive.
1998: Arsenal signed Freddie Ljungberg from Halmstads for £3million after Arsene Wenger watched him play for Sweden against England.
2001: St Helens forward Sonny Nickle was handed a six-month ban for a challenge that broke the jaw of Leeds hooker Robbie Mears.
2005: USA regained the Solheim Cup from Europe at Crooked Stick, Indiana.
2006: Roger Federer won the US Open with a 6-2 4-6 7-5 6-1 win over Andy Roddick at Flushing Meadows.

Nick Dempsey has claimed gold at the RS:X windsurfing World Championship in Weymouth. The Athens Olympic bronze medalist was leading by six points ahead of Nimrod Mashich going into Thursday's final day and the Israeli could not make up the deficit. The regatta took place at the same venue which will host the event at the 2012 Olympics.
