TRIATHLON
Great Britain's Helen Jenkins took bronze in the
senior women's grand final but finished fifth in the overall
championship standings of the ITU Triathlon World Championships on
Australia's Gold Coast. Jenkins saw off the challenge of American
Sarah Haskins to claim third place in Sunday's final, which was won
by overall championship winner Emma Moffatt of Australia. Moffatt
finished 27 seconds ahead of Jenkins and six ahead of Swedish silver
medallist Lisa Norden.
ATHLETICS
Tyson Gay snatched victory ahead of Asafa Powell in a
thrilling 100 metres at the World Athletics Final in Thessalonika on
Saturday night. Powell, chasing a sixth success at the lucrative
meeting, seemed to have another win assured a few strides from the
line. But American Gay, with an astonishing spurt, threw himself
across the line to win by two hundredths of a second.
Hannah England outshone all of last month's World
Championships 1500 metres medallists, including fellow British
athlete Lisa Dobriskey, with a thrilling second place in Saturday
night's World Athletics Final in Thessalonika. Despite the
disappointment of not making the British team for Berlin, England has
always maintained she has the self confidence and the talent to prove
her consistency at the highest level.
CYCLING
Australian Chris Sutton won the opening stage of the
Tour of Britain in York on Saturday, taking the line in a bunch
sprint thanks to sterling efforts from Garmin team-mate and Tour de
France hero Bradley Wiggins. |
