1948: Legendary Australian Don Bradman played his last innings on British soil in Aberdeen, scoring 123 against Scotland.
1998: Croatia World Cup star Robert Jarni abandoned a £2.6million move to Coventry after previously agreeing to join the Highfield Road club, and signed a three-year contract with Real Madrid.
1999: Peter Nicol became Britain's first men's world squash champion following his victory over Ahmed Barada in the final of the Al-Ahram Men's World Open Championship in Egypt.
1999: Hampshire signed Australian leg-spin wizard Shane Warne as their overseas player in one of the most lucrative contracts ever agreed in county championship history.
2000: The British cycling team, including 1km time trial gold medallist Jason Queally, won silver in the sprint at the Sydney Olympics.
2004: Jaguar announced they would be pulling out of Formula One at the end of the season after deciding they could "no longer make a compelling business case" for participation.
2006: Essex won the NatWest Pro40 title despite losing to Durham by six wickets

CYCLING
Team Sky-bound Edvald Boasson Hagen continued his searing progress with a third successive stage victory of the Tour of Britain to claim the leader's yellow jersey. The 22-year-old, who won stage three in Gretna Green and four in Blackpool, triumphed in the 134-kilometre stage which began at Stoke City's Britannia Stadium and concluded in front of the Town Hall in the Staffordshire town.
