1960: Blackpool's derby against Bolton was the first Football League match to be televised live.
1975: A week after reaching the US Open semi-finals as an 18-year-old, Martina Navratilova defected from her native Czechoslovakia to the west and was granted political asylum in the United States.
1990: At 19 years and one month old, Pete Sampras became the youngest winner of the US Open. He beat Andre Agassi 6-4 6-3 6-2 in the final.
2001: Venus Williams beat her sister, Serena, 6-2 6-4 to win the US Open at Flushing Meadows in the first grand slam final to feature two sisters since 1884.
2002: England's cricket side saw the last day of the fourth Test against India at The Oval completely washed out by rain. This ensured England went into the Ashes unbeaten all year.
2003: Manchester United confirmed Peter Kenyon - now at Chelsea - would be leaving as chief executive.
2004: Tim Henman's four-set win over Dominik Hrbaty took him into the US Open semi-finals for the first time in his career.

PARALYMPICS
Mark Bristow followed Darren Kenny to cycling gold as Great Britain's dominance of the Laoshan Velodrome track continued in Beijing today. Bristow triumphed in the men's LC1 one-kilometre time-trial in a world record of one minute 08.873 seconds for Britain's ninth gold of the Games.
Great Britain's youngest Paralympian Eleanor Simmonds sent a shockwave through the National Aquatics Centre with a stunning and inspirational victory in Beijing on Tuesday. The 13-year-old's sensational performance was the catalyst for a successful evening at the Water Cube, with David Roberts taking gold, Heather Frederiksen and Louise Watkin silver and Matt Walker bronze.
Anthony Kappes and tandem pilot rider Barney Storey had earlier won Britain's fourth cycling gold of the Games at the Laoshan Velodrome.
The athletics team also weighed in with silver medals for Shelly Woods(disputed) and Chris Martin on the first day of competition at the Bird's Nest Stadium.
CYCLING
Australian Matthew Goss timed his sprint finish to perfection to claim the second stage of the Tour of Britain in a frantic finish in Newbury. The 21-year-old Tasmanian, who won the third stage of last year's race, escaped a mass pile-up in the closing stages to edge out Garmin-Chipotle team-mates Julian Dean and Chris Sutton on the line.
Great Britain's Roger Hammond was a place further back in fourth while Alessandro Petacchi, the winner of stage one in London, retained the yellow jersey after finishing sixth.
