SAILING
Britain's Paralympic sailors were celebrating medal wins and a World Cup title after competing for the first time on the London 2012 waters on Friday. Tricky winds kept the 2.4-metre, the Skud-18 and the Sonar classes shore-bound for two days out of five this week at the Skandia Sail for Gold event, hosted by the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, Dorset. The American team of Rick Doerr, Hugh Freund and Maureen Mckinnon Tucker dominated the Sonar Fleet and finished in first place after a total of seven races among the nine teams competing. Mckinnon Tucker became the first female to win gold in sailing at the Paralympic Games in Beijing with Nick Scandone. She switched classes after 42-year-old Scandone died in January of ALS, known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, a debilitating neurodegenerative disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. This week has been only the second time the US team have raced together. Their British rivals John Robertson, Hannah Stodel and Steve Thomas took silver but ended the regatta as winners of the ISAF World Cup in their class.
